## Biography

Sherwin Cody (1868-1959) was an influential American writer and entrepreneur renowned for his pioneering work in home-study English education. Orphaned early in life, he pursued higher education at Amherst College before embarking on a career as an author. A vocal critic of conventional English instruction, Cody championed a colloquial style and practical grammar for everyday use. His most significant contribution was the development of the "100% Self-correcting Course in English Language," launched in 1918. This patented workbook format, famously advertised with the question "Do You Make These Mistakes in English?", attracted over 150,000 students seeking to improve their communication skills. Cody published essays, books, and articles continuously from 1893 through 1950, leaving a lasting impact on popular language instruction and the broader self-improvement movement of the early 20th century. His work emphasized clarity, correctness, and a courteous, accessible approach to mastering the English language.
