# Arnold Bennett

## Biography

Enoch Arnold Bennett was a prolific English writer born on May 27, 1867, in Hanley, Staffordshire, one of the industrial "Potteries" towns that would become the setting for many of his most celebrated novels. Though initially intended to follow his solicitor father into the legal profession, Bennett moved to London at age twenty-one to pursue a literary career. He began in journalism, editing a women's magazine, before becoming a full-time author in 1900.

Bennett's extensive output included 34 novels, seven volumes of short stories, and 13 plays. He is best known for his detailed, realistic portrayals of provincial life, particularly in works like *Anna of the Five Towns* and his masterpiece, *The Old Wives' Tale*. Influenced by French realists, he lived in Paris for nearly a decade, further refining his craft. A financially successful author, he also contributed to the Ministry of Information during World War I. Bennett died in London on March 27, 1931, of typhoid fever.
