## Biography

Mary Elizabeth Braddon, born in London in 1835, was a highly influential and prolific English novelist of the Victorian era. She initially pursued a career in acting to support herself and her mother before turning to writing full-time. Braddon became known as the "Queen of Sensation" for her contributions to the sensation fiction genre. Her most famous work, the bestselling novel Lady Audley's Secret, published in 1862, caused a considerable stir and firmly established her reputation. She went on to write over eighty novels, often publishing multiple books a year, exploring themes such as bigamy and women's agency. Beyond her novels, Braddon also contributed essays, short stories, and poems to various periodicals and edited literary magazines like Temple Bar and Belgravia. She married publisher John Maxwell in 1874, after a controversial period of cohabitation. Braddon died in 1915, leaving a significant legacy in Victorian literature.
