# Ernst Junger

## Biography

Ernst Jünger was a prominent German novelist, essayist, and philosopher, born in Heidelberg in 1895. His life and prolific literary output, spanning over forty books, were profoundly shaped by his experiences as a highly decorated officer in World War I. His iconic memoir, The Storm of Steel, vividly recounts his time in the trenches, gaining critical acclaim for its dispassionate yet powerful depiction of combat. After the war, Jünger continued to explore themes of war, technology, and individualism in works like The Glass Bees and On the Marble Cliffs, the latter a daring allegory against totalitarianism published during the Nazi era. Though a figure of the conservative revolution and initially a nationalist, he steadfastly refused to join the Nazi party and later criticized its regime, leading to his dismissal from the army during World War II. Jünger also pursued a passion for entomology. He lived a long life, continuing to publish introspective essays and novels, and died in 1998 at the age of 102.
