# Ann Radcliffe

## Biography

Ann Ward Radcliffe was an English novelist and poet, born Ann Ward in London in 1764. She became a pioneering figure in the Gothic novel genre, known for her atmospheric and suspenseful tales. In 1787, she married William Radcliffe, a journalist, and began her writing career. Her first novel, The Castles of Athlin and Dunbayne, was published in 1789. She quickly rose to prominence with works like The Romance of the Forest and her most famous, The Mysteries of Udolpho in 1794, followed by The Italian in 1797. Radcliffe's novels often featured distressed heroines, villainous aristocrats, and seemingly supernatural occurrences that were later explained rationally, all set against a backdrop of brooding landscapes and ancient castles. Despite her widespread success and influence on future writers, she was famously reclusive and published little after the peak of her career, leading a quiet life until her death in 1823.
