# Emmeline Pankhurst

## Biography

Emmeline Pankhurst was a towering figure in the fight for women's suffrage in Great Britain, born Emmeline Goulden in Manchester in 1858. From a young age, she was exposed to radical politics through her parents, who were abolitionists and advocates for women's rights. She married Richard Pankhurst, a barrister and supporter of women's suffrage. In 1903, disillusioned with the slow pace of change, she founded the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU), an organization that adopted increasingly militant tactics under the slogan "deeds, not words." Pankhurst's leadership led to numerous arrests and imprisonments, where she and other suffragettes famously engaged in hunger strikes. Her unwavering determination and controversial methods brought global attention to the cause, ultimately contributing to women gaining the right to vote in the United Kingdom. She also penned her autobiography, "My Own Story," offering a personal account of her struggles and beliefs. Emmeline Pankhurst died in 1928, shortly after women achieved full voting equality.
