# Keith Laumer

## Biography

John Keith Laumer was an American science fiction author born in Syracuse, New York, in 1925. His diverse early career deeply influenced his writing; he served in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II, attended various universities, and earned degrees in science and architecture. He later served twice in the US Air Force, attaining the rank of captain, and was a diplomat in the US Foreign Service, including a posting in Burma.

Laumer transitioned to full-time writing in 1965, becoming a prolific author known for his fast-paced adventure stories and satirical humor. He is best recognized for his "Bolo" series, featuring self-aware super-tanks, and the "Retief" series, which comically depicts the adventures of an unorthodox interstellar diplomat, often drawing from Laumer's own diplomatic experiences. His works frequently explored themes of military action, parallel worlds, and time travel. In 1971, Laumer suffered a stroke that impacted his writing, though he continued to publish. He passed away in 1993, leaving behind a significant legacy in the science fiction genre.
