# Charles Fitch

## Biography

Charles Fitch, born in Hampton, Connecticut in 1805, became a significant American preacher and author in the 19th century. After graduating from Brown University, he was ordained as a Congregational minister, serving in several churches. He was a vocal opponent of slavery, publishing a pamphlet titled "Slaveholding Weighed in the Balance of Truth." Fitch is most recognized for his involvement with the Millerite movement, which anticipated the Second Coming of Christ. Initially hesitant to embrace William Miller's teachings, he later became one of its most ardent and effective leaders, actively preaching and promoting the advent message. He co-designed the widely used 1843 prophetic chart, a key visual aid for the movement. Charles Fitch passed away in October 1844 at the age of 39, succumbing to a fever contracted while baptizing converts, just days before the expected advent.
