# Marcus Cicero

## Biography

Marcus Tullius Cicero, born in 106 BCE in Arpinum, was a preeminent Roman statesman, lawyer, scholar, philosopher, orator, and writer whose life coincided with the tumultuous decline of the Roman Republic. Educated extensively in Rome and Greece, he quickly rose through political ranks, becoming consul in 63 BCE. During his consulship, he famously exposed and suppressed the Catilinarian conspiracy, an event he considered his greatest achievement. Cicero was renowned as the greatest Roman orator, and his extensive writings on rhetoric, philosophy, and politics greatly influenced Latin prose and Western thought. Though he tirelessly advocated for republican principles, he often found himself caught between powerful factions. His vocal opposition to Mark Antony after Julius Caesar's assassination ultimately led to his murder in 43 BCE, cementing his legacy as a defender of liberty and a master of eloquence.
