# John Keynes

## Biography

John Maynard Keynes was a highly influential British economist born in Cambridge, England, in 1883. His father was also an economist. Keynes displayed early academic promise, excelling in mathematics before studying economics at King's College, Cambridge. He began his career in the Civil Service, later returning to Cambridge as a lecturer. His early work included studies on Indian currency and finance.

Keynes rose to international prominence for his revolutionary economic theories, which fundamentally challenged classical economic thought. During the Great Depression, he advocated for government intervention through fiscal and monetary policies to stimulate demand and combat unemployment, a school of thought now known as Keynesian economics. His seminal work, "The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money," published in 1936, laid the theoretical groundwork for these ideas and profoundly shaped macroeconomic policy in the 20th century. He was also involved in the design of post-World War II international economic institutions. Keynes died in 1946, leaving an enduring legacy as one of the most significant economists in history.
