# Hilaire Belloc

## Biography

Joseph Hilaire Pierre René Belloc was born in La Celle-Saint-Cloud, France, on July 27, 1870, to a French father and an English mother. He moved to England after his father's death and received his education at the Oratory School and later Balliol College, Oxford, where he excelled in history. After military service in France, Belloc became a naturalized British subject in 1902.

A remarkably versatile writer of the early 20th century, Belloc produced over 150 books spanning poetry, history, essays, and novels. He is celebrated for his light verse, including "The Bad Child's Book of Beasts," and his travel writing, such as "The Path to Rome." His strong Roman Catholic faith profoundly influenced his work, often informing his historical analyses and social commentary. Belloc also had a brief political career, serving as a Member of Parliament for Salford from 1906 to 1910. He was a close friend and collaborator of G.K. Chesterton, with whom he shared many literary and philosophical debates. Belloc continued to write prolifically until a stroke in 1942, and he died on July 16, 1953, in Guildford, Surrey, England.
