## Biography

Alfred Thayer Mahan was a prominent American naval officer and historian, born in West Point, New York, in 1840. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1859 and served during the American Civil War. Though his naval career included active service, Mahan's true strengths emerged in strategy and history, leading to a distinguished role as an educator. In 1886, he became president of the newly established Naval War College.

Mahan's most influential work, The Influence of Sea Power upon History, 1660–1805, published in 1890, argued that national prosperity and military dominance were heavily reliant on powerful navies. This groundbreaking book garnered widespread international recognition, particularly in Europe, where it profoundly influenced naval policies and contributed to the naval arms race preceding World War I. His ideas also significantly shaped American naval strategy, notably influencing Theodore Roosevelt's advocacy for a stronger U.S. fleet. Mahan continued to write extensively on naval issues after his retirement in 1896, further solidifying his legacy as a pivotal naval strategist until his death in 1914.
