# Louis Bourrienne

## Biography

Louis Antoine Fauvelet de Bourrienne, born in Sens, France, in 1769, was a French diplomat best known for his memoirs detailing his close relationship with Napoleon Bonaparte. They were classmates at the military academy of Brienne, though their paths diverged before reuniting in Paris. Bourrienne served as Napoleon's private secretary for six years, accompanying him to Egypt. After an accusation of financial misconduct, he was dismissed in 1802. He later held a diplomatic post in Hamburg, where he was again accused of impropriety. Becoming an opponent of Napoleon, Bourrienne supported the Bourbon restoration and served in various governmental roles. He found refuge in Belgium from creditors in 1828 and there composed his extensive "Memoirs of Napoleon," published between 1829 and 1830. These memoirs, while offering a vivid account, are considered by some to be unreliable in certain aspects. He died in 1834 after suffering from a mental illness.
