## Biography

Jacob Ludwig Karl Grimm, born in Hanau, Germany, on January 4, 1785, was a distinguished German author, linguist, philologist, jurist, and folklorist. He is best known globally as one half of the "Brothers Grimm," alongside his younger brother Wilhelm, with whom he compiled the iconic "Children's and Household Tales," often referred to as "Grimms' Fairy Tales." Their enduring collection, first published in 1812, significantly influenced the study of folklore and popularized classic stories like "Cinderella" and "Hansel and Gretel."

Beyond his celebrated literary contributions, Jacob Grimm made profound advancements in linguistics. He formulated Grimm's Law, a pivotal discovery detailing consonant shifts in Indo-European languages, which laid foundational work in comparative philology. He also co-authored the monumental "Deutsches Wörterbuch," the first comprehensive dictionary of the German language, and wrote "Deutsche Mythologie." A lifelong scholar, Grimm studied law at the University of Marburg and held positions as a librarian and professor. He remained unmarried, working closely with his brother throughout his life until his death in Berlin on September 20, 1863.
