# Louis Newman

## Biography

Louis Newman is a distinguished scholar of Jewish ethics, an educational consultant, and a college success coach. He currently holds the title of John M. and Elizabeth W. Musser Professor of Religious Studies, emeritus, at Carleton College, where he taught for over three decades. Additionally, he previously served as the Dean of Academic Advising and Associate Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education at Stanford University. Newman was born and raised in St. Paul, Minnesota, and pursued his academic journey by earning a B.A. and M.A. in philosophy from the University of Minnesota, followed by a Ph.D. in Religious Studies from Brown University. He is the author of several influential books, including "Thinking Critically in College: The Essential Handbook for Student Success," "Repentance: The Meaning and Practice of Teshuvah," and "An Introduction to Jewish Ethics." Newman also co-edited various anthologies on Jewish ethics and theology and was the founding President of the Society of Jewish Ethics. He is widely recognized for his extensive experience in teaching, advising, and faculty development.
