# Sydney Noe

## Biography

Sydney P. Noe was an influential American numismatist, born on April 4, 1885, in Woodbridge Township, New Jersey. Though he earned a master's degree in engineering from Rutgers University in 1913, his true passion emerged when he began classifying a coin donation while working part-time in the library, sparking a lifelong dedication to numismatics. Noe became a central figure at the American Numismatic Society, serving as librarian from 1915, then curator, and eventually chief curator emeritus upon his retirement in 1953. He also held roles as Secretary and Editor for the society, overseeing the launch of significant numismatic publication series. His extensive written works specialized in Greek coinage and colonial American currency, including notable titles such as "Coin Hoards" and "The Pine Tree Coinages of Massachusetts." His comprehensive study "The Coinage of Metapontum" remains a fundamental reference in the field. Recognized for his profound contributions, Noe was honored with both the Archer M. Huntington Medal and the Medal of the Royal Numismatic Society. He passed away on June 4, 1969, leaving a lasting legacy in numismatic scholarship.
