# Edgar Thurston

## Biography

Edgar Thurston was a notable British ethnographer, zoologist, and physician, born in London in 1855. After studying medicine at King's College London, he embarked on a distinguished career in colonial Southern India. From 1885 to 1908, Thurston served as the Superintendent of the Madras Government Museum, where he made profound contributions to natural history and anthropology. His extensive research focused on documenting the diverse communities of Southern India, meticulously recording their cultural practices, social structures, and physical characteristics. This culminated in his monumental seven-volume work, "Castes and Tribes of Southern India," published in 1909. Other significant publications include "Omens and Superstitions of Southern India." Thurston's dedication to empirical study, including direct observation and anthropometric measurements, provided invaluable ethnographic data from the pre-independence era. He retired to England and passed away in Penzance in 1935.
