# Honore Balzac

## Biography

Honoré de Balzac, born May 20, 1799, in Tours, France, became one of the most celebrated and prolific French novelists of the 19th century. Although he initially pursued a career in law, he soon abandoned it to dedicate himself to writing, despite early struggles and financial difficulties. His ambitious literary project, *La Comédie humaine*, a vast collection of almost one hundred interconnected novels and short stories, aimed to vividly depict and analyze French society after the fall of Napoleon. Balzac is recognized as a pioneering figure in literary realism, known for his meticulous attention to detail, intricate plots, and the psychological depth of his diverse characters. He meticulously portrayed all social strata, from peasants to aristocrats, making his work an invaluable historical record. His powerful influence extended to subsequent generations of writers, including notable figures like Gustave Flaubert and Charles Dickens. Balzac passed away on August 18, 1850, in Paris, just months after marrying his long-time love, Ewelina Hańska.
