# Valmiki

## Biography

Valmiki, an ancient Indian sage, is celebrated as the revered author of the Sanskrit epic Ramayana, a cornerstone of Hindu tradition and South Asian literature. He is honorifically known as Adi Kavi, or the First Poet. Legends surrounding his early life suggest a remarkable transformation. Many accounts describe him initially as a Brahmin named Ratnakar or Agni Sharma who became a notorious robber. After a profound encounter with a sage, often Narada, he repented his past and dedicated himself to intense penance. It is said that anthills, or "valmika," grew around him during his deep meditation, thus earning him the name Valmiki. Within the Ramayana itself, Valmiki plays a significant role, providing refuge to Rama's wife Sita and teaching the epic poem to her twin sons. His spontaneous composition of the first poetic verse is often attributed to witnessing a poignant moment of violence against a pair of birds. His monumental work continues to influence countless generations.
