## Biography

Alexander Mackenzie was a Scottish writer, historian, and editor, born in Gairloch, Wester Ross, Scotland, in 1838. Despite limited early educational opportunities, he developed a profound interest in Scottish history and culture. Mackenzie initially worked in the clothes trade, even establishing a shop with his brother in Inverness, earning him the nickname 'Clach na Cudainn.' His literary career blossomed as he transitioned into journalism, becoming a key figure in the Scottish publishing world. He served as editor and publisher of influential periodicals such as The Celtic Magazine and The Scottish Highlander. Mackenzie is celebrated for his extensive historical writings, which include significant works like The History of the Highland Clearances, a critical account of a pivotal period in Scottish history, and The Prophecies of the Brahan Seer. He also meticulously documented various clan histories, contributing greatly to the preservation of Scottish heritage. Alexander Mackenzie passed away in 1898, leaving behind a valuable literary legacy.
