# Rustichello of Pisa

## Biography

Rustichello of Pisa, also known as Rusticiano, was an Italian romance writer who flourished in the late 13th century. A native of Pisa, he is best known for his collaboration with Marco Polo, transcribing and shaping Polo’s oral narratives into the monumental travelogue, "The Travels of Marco Polo." This significant literary endeavor took place while both men were imprisoned in Genoa, likely around 1298, following a naval conflict between their respective cities. Before this pivotal work, Rustichello was an established author of Arthurian romances. His notable earlier creation was the "Roman de Roi Artus," or "The Compilation," an extensive work in Franco-Italian that is recognized as the earliest known Arthurian romance penned by an Italian author. His literary contributions not only preserved chivalric tales but also played a crucial role in introducing Europeans to the wonders of distant lands through Polo's captivating accounts.
