# Henry Dudeney

## Biography

Henry Ernest Dudeney was an English author and mathematician renowned for his contributions to logic puzzles and mathematical games. Born in Mayfield, East Sussex, in 1857, he developed an early interest in chess and problem-solving, a passion that continued throughout his life. Though largely self-taught in mathematics, Dudeney dedicated his spare time to the subject while working in the Civil Service.

He gained widespread recognition as one of the foremost creators of mathematical puzzles, publishing extensively in newspapers and magazines, sometimes under the pseudonym "Sphinx." Dudeney authored several influential collections, including "The Canterbury Puzzles" (1907), "Amusements in Mathematics" (1917), and "Modern Puzzles" (1926). His innovations include the first known crossnumber puzzle and a famous solution to the Haberdasher's Puzzle. He passed away in Lewes, Sussex, in 1930, leaving behind a significant legacy in recreational mathematics.
