## Biography

François duc de La Rochefoucauld was a celebrated French moralist and writer, born in Paris on September 15, 1613, into one of France's most illustrious aristocratic families. His early life was characterized by military service and deep involvement in court intrigues, including the tumultuous Fronde rebellions against the French crown. These experiences, often marked by political disillusionment and personal injury, profoundly shaped his cynical yet insightful views on human nature and morality. Following his active, though often thwarted, political and military career, La Rochefoucauld turned to literary salons. There, he distilled his observations into his most famous work, *Maximes*, a collection of concise, often biting aphorisms that explore self-interest as the underlying motive for all human actions. He also authored *Memoirs*, offering a historical perspective on his turbulent era. La Rochefoucauld died in Paris on March 17, 1680, leaving behind a legacy as a master of the maxim and a keen observer of the human condition, influencing later thinkers like Nietzsche.
