# Henry Fielding

## Biography

Henry Fielding, born in 1707 in Somerset, England, was a prominent English writer and judge celebrated for his pioneering contributions to the novel form. Initially a prolific playwright known for his satirical comedies, his theatrical career was curtailed by the Licensing Act of 1737. This shift prompted his turn to prose fiction, where he quickly gained renown. He is widely regarded, alongside Samuel Richardson, as a founder of the traditional English novel. His most famous works include the satirical *Shamela*, *Joseph Andrews*, and his masterpiece, *The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling*. Fielding also pursued a legal career, becoming a barrister and later a justice of the peace for Westminster. In this judicial role, he significantly reformed London’s justice system and helped establish the Bow Street Runners, an early precursor to a police force. He died in Lisbon in 1754.
