# Giacomo Casanova

## Biography

Giacomo Casanova was an Italian adventurer and prolific writer, born in Venice in 1725. Though he lived a life of extensive travel across Europe, serving variously as a diplomat, spy, and even a confidence trickster, he is primarily remembered for his monumental autobiography. Titled "Histoire de ma vie" (The Story of My Life), this extensive memoir was penned in French and published posthumously. It offers a unique and vivid window into the social customs and intellectual landscape of 18th-century European society, detailing his encounters with notable figures and his numerous romantic escapades, which led his name to become synonymous with "libertine." Casanova also authored other works, including occasional verse, criticism, and a translation of the Iliad. He spent his final years as a librarian in Dux, Bohemia, where he dedicated himself to writing his celebrated life story, before his death in 1798.
