# Robert Benson

## Biography

Robert Hugh Benson was an English Catholic priest and prolific writer, born in 1871 as the youngest son of Edward White Benson, who was then the Archbishop of Canterbury. After an education at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge, Benson was ordained an Anglican priest in 1895. However, a significant spiritual journey led him to convert to Roman Catholicism in 1903, a decision that caused considerable public interest given his prominent family background. He was ordained a Catholic priest the following year.

Benson became a widely read author, known for his diverse literary output. His works spanned historical novels, ghost and horror stories, science fiction, and children's literature, alongside numerous apologetic and devotional texts. He is particularly recognized for his dystopian novel, *Lord of the World*, published in 1907, as well as *Come Rack! Come Rope!* and collections like *The Light Invisible*. Appointed a Monsignor in 1911, Benson continued to write and preach until his death in 1914.
