## Biography

Anne Topham (1864-1927) was an English author best known for her intimate memoirs of life within the German imperial family. Born in Derby, she resided in Spondon from the age of seven. For seven years, between 1902 and 1909, Topham served as the English governess to Princess Victoria Louise, the only daughter of Kaiser Wilhelm II. Her experiences and observations during this period formed the basis of her most successful work, "Memories of the Kaiser's Court," published in 1914, which offered a unique glimpse into the Prussian court and was widely acclaimed. She also authored "Daphne in the Fatherland" and "A Distant Thunder: Intimate Recollections of the Kaiser's Court." Topham continued to write more books throughout her career and is buried in Spondon Cemetery. Her life story was further explored in a biography published by the Spondon Archive in 2022.
