# Percy Westerman

## Biography

Percy Francis Westerman was a prolific English author of children's adventure literature, born in Portsmouth in 1876. Educated at Portsmouth Grammar School, he initially worked at Portsmouth Dockyard before becoming a full-time writer in 1911, following the success of his early books. He married Florence Wager in 1900, and their son, John F.C. Westerman, also became a writer of adventure stories for boys. A keen sailor, Westerman lived for many years on a converted Thames barge houseboat on the River Frome, where he penned the majority of his works. His writing career, which produced over 170 books with military and naval themes, often featuring elements of early science fiction, spanned from 1908 until his death in 1959. During both World War I and World War II, he served in various capacities, including coastal duties for the Royal Navy, as a navigation instructor in the Royal Flying Corps, and in the Dorset Home Guard, always managing to maintain his impressive literary output. In the 1930s, he was voted the most popular author of stories for boys, and his books sold over 1.5 million copies in his lifetime.
