# Percy Standing

## Biography

Percy Cross Standing was a prolific English writer born in Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, in 1871. Educated privately, he showed an early engagement with social issues, serving as assistant editor for the Labour Elector during the significant London Dock Strike of 1889, the same year his first book, "Battlefields of Hertfordshire," was published. His diverse career spanned journalism, including a role as assistant editor for "Cricket: A Weekly Record of the Game" and as London correspondent for the "Manchester Evening Mail." Standing’s interests were wide-ranging, from military history, covered in works such as "The Boxer Rising" and "Guerrilla Leaders of the World," to the arts, exemplified by his writings on Henrik Ibsen and Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema. He also authored "Cricket of To-day and Yesterday" and biographical works on prominent cricketers. In his later years, Standing held the position of editor for the "Contemporary Review."
