# Alec Waugh

## Biography

Alec Waugh was a British novelist and travel writer, born Alexander Raban Waugh in London on July 8, 1898. He was the elder brother of the more widely known author Evelyn Waugh, and son of literary critic and publisher Arthur Waugh. Educated at Sherborne School, his expulsion from the institution informed his controversial debut novel, The Loom of Youth (1917), which explored public school life and caused a sensation for its candid portrayal of adolescent relationships. Waugh served in the British army during both World Wars, including time as a prisoner of war in WWI. His extensive travels, particularly to tropical countries, heavily influenced his work, leading to many novels and travelogues. Among his notable works is Island in the Sun (1956), which was later adapted into a successful film. He was also known for his nonfiction writing on wine and spirits. Alec Waugh married three times, with his last marriage to American novelist Virginia Sorensen. He died on September 3, 1981, in Tampa, Florida.
