## Biography

Matthew Gregory Lewis, born in London in 1775, was a celebrated English novelist and dramatist primarily known for his contributions to Gothic horror. Educated at Westminster School and Christ Church, Oxford, Lewis initially pursued a diplomatic career, traveling extensively in Europe and encountering influential figures like Goethe. His literary fame was cemented in 1796 with the publication of his sensational Gothic novel, The Monk, which earned him the enduring moniker "Monk" Lewis. The work, characterized by its blend of the supernatural and the macabre, became both an immense success and a source of controversy. Beyond his writing, Lewis served as a Member of Parliament and, later in life, managed inherited plantations in Jamaica. He demonstrated a notable concern for the welfare of the enslaved people on his estates. Lewis tragically died at sea in 1818 from yellow fever while returning from a visit to Jamaica, leaving behind a significant legacy in Gothic literature.
