# Alan Nourse

## Biography

Alan Edward Nourse was an American science fiction author and physician, born on August 11, 1928, in Des Moines, Iowa. After serving in the U.S. Navy, he pursued higher education, earning a Bachelor of Science degree from Rutgers University and a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Pennsylvania. He balanced a career in medicine with his passion for writing, eventually transitioning to a full-time literary profession.

Nourse was a prolific writer of both juvenile and adult science fiction, often incorporating medical themes into his stories. He also authored numerous nonfiction works on science and medicine, sometimes under the pseudonym "Dr. X." His notable works include the novel Star Surgeon and The Bladerunner. Robert A. Heinlein dedicated his 1964 novel Farnham's Freehold to Nourse. He passed away on July 19, 1992, in Thorp, Washington, leaving behind a significant body of work that blended scientific knowledge with imaginative storytelling.
