Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) was a towering figure of the Bengal Renaissance, an Indian polymath who reshaped Bengali literature and music. Born in Calcutta, he began writing poetry at an early age and published his first substantial works under a pseudonym at sixteen. Though he briefly studied law in England, he returned to India to dedicate himself to writing and managing his family estates. Tagore pioneered new prose and verse forms, introducing colloquial language into Bengali literature. His vast output included thousands of songs, poems, short stories, novels like "Gora," and plays. In 1913, he became the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature for his collection "Gitanjali," recognized for its profoundly sensitive verse.
