# Inazo Nitobe

## Biography

Inazo Nitobe, born in Morioka, Japan, in 1862, was a distinguished figure whose life spanned various fields as an agronomist, diplomat, political scientist, and influential writer. Educated at Sapporo Agricultural College, Johns Hopkins University, and the University of Halle, he pursued a comprehensive understanding of both Eastern and Western thought. Nitobe is perhaps best known for his seminal work, *Bushido: The Soul of Japan*, which introduced the samurai code of ethics to a Western audience and aimed to foster cross-cultural understanding. He dedicated his career to building bridges between Japan and the West, serving as an under-secretary general of the League of Nations and a passionate advocate for international peace. A devout Quaker, he also championed women's education and held positions as president of several colleges, including Tokyo Woman's Christian University, until his death in 1933.
