# James Allen

## Biography

James Allen was a British philosophical writer, widely recognized as a pioneer of the self-help movement. Born in Leicester, England, in 1864, his early life was marked by hardship; the tragic death of his father at a young age compelled him to leave school and enter the workforce to support his family. Allen initially held various positions as a private secretary and stationer.

He later transitioned into a career in writing, driven by his spiritual and social interests. In 1902, he began publishing his own spiritual magazine, *The Epoch*. Allen became best known for his inspirational books, particularly *As a Man Thinketh*, published in 1903, which profoundly influenced motivational and self-help literature. He authored approximately nineteen works before his death in 1912, leaving a lasting legacy through his practical wisdom on the power of thought and personal responsibility.
