# Charles Perrault

## Biography

Charles Perrault was a renowned French author and a significant figure in the 17th-century literary scene, born in Paris on January 12, 1628. From a wealthy bourgeois family, he received an excellent education and initially pursued a career in government service and law. He became a member of the Académie Française and played a prominent role in the "Quarrel of the Ancients and Moderns," advocating for the superiority of contemporary literature.

Perrault is best remembered for his pivotal role in establishing the literary genre of the fairy tale. His most famous work, Histoires ou contes du temps passé, published in 1697, introduced timeless stories such as "Little Red Riding Hood," "Cinderella," "Puss in Boots," "Sleeping Beauty," and "Bluebeard." These tales, derived from earlier folk traditions, were written in a new, modernized style and often included moral lessons. Perrault’s work profoundly influenced later authors, including the Brothers Grimm, and his stories continue to be beloved classics adapted across various entertainment formats. He died in Paris on May 16, 1703.
