# Kris Neville

## Biography

Kris Ottman Neville (1925–1980) was an American science fiction writer known for his insightful yet often dark contributions to the genre. Born in Missouri, Neville began publishing his distinctive short fiction in 1949, quickly establishing a reputation for thought-provoking narratives. His most celebrated work, the novella *Bettyann*, originally appearing as a series of short stories, was later expanded into a novel in 1970 and is considered a classic for its exploration of otherness and identity.

Despite early success, Neville largely withdrew from the science fiction scene in the 1950s, reportedly finding the genre’s editorial confines too restrictive for his evolving vision. He occasionally published stories and a handful of novels, including *The Mutants* and *Earth Alert!*, but his output in fiction significantly diminished. Outside of writing, Neville cultivated a respected career as an expert in epoxy resins, co-authoring several foundational texts in the field. He passed away in Los Angeles, California, leaving behind a body of work that, though not extensive, continues to be valued by critics and readers for its psychological depth and unique perspective.
