## Biography

Herodotus, born around 484 BCE in Halicarnassus, a Greek city in Asia Minor then under Persian rule, is widely known as the "Father of History." This title was bestowed upon him by the Roman orator Cicero, recognizing his pioneering efforts in historical writing. Herodotus embarked on extensive travels throughout the ancient world, journeying to Egypt, Libya, Syria, Babylonia, and various Greek city-states, meticulously gathering information for his monumental work, "The Histories."

His singular masterpiece recounts the Greco-Persian Wars, exploring their causes and providing rich cultural, geographical, and ethnographic details about the peoples involved. He aimed to preserve the memory of past events and the great deeds of both Greeks and barbarians, seeking to understand why they fought. Herodotus was renowned for his engaging narrative style and his deep interest in human customs and societies. While sometimes criticized for including legendary or anecdotal accounts, modern scholarship often confirms the underlying reliability of much of his reporting. He is thought to have resided in Athens and later in the Athenian-sponsored colony of Thurii in southern Italy, where he likely refined his work. The precise date and location of his death, estimated between 430 and 420 BCE, remain uncertain.
