# Arthur Machen

## Biography

Arthur Machen, born Arthur Llewellyn Jones in Caerleon, Wales, on March 3, 1863, was an influential writer renowned for his supernatural, occult, and mystical fiction. Though his family’s financial difficulties prevented university attendance, he received a good education at Hereford Cathedral School. Machen spent much of his life in London, pursuing various professions including clerk, journalist, and even actor, often struggling financially.

He gained significant recognition in the 1890s for his unsettling tales like The Great God Pan and The Three Impostors, which explored themes of ancient evil and hidden realities. Machen’s work was deeply rooted in his Welsh heritage, blending Roman paganism and Celtic magic to create a unique psycho-geographical style. Later, his short story "The Bowmen" during World War I spawned the widely believed legend of the Angels of Mons. Despite periods of hardship, his visionary work profoundly influenced subsequent horror and fantasy authors, including H.P. Lovecraft. Machen died in 1947, leaving a lasting legacy in supernatural literature.
