# Nikolai Gogol

## Biography

Nikolai Vasilevich Gogol was a prominent Russian novelist, short-story writer, and playwright of Ukrainian origin, born in Sorochyntsi in 1809. His early works, such as "Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka," drew heavily on his Ukrainian upbringing and folklore. After moving to St. Petersburg, he pursued a literary career, initially facing challenges. He gained significant recognition with works like "The Nose," "The Overcoat," and the play "The Government Inspector." Gogol is also celebrated for his satirical novel "Dead Souls." He lived abroad for many years, primarily in Rome. In his later life, he became increasingly religious and prone to despair, eventually burning much of the manuscript for the second part of "Dead Souls." Nikolai Gogol died in Moscow in 1852. His unique dark comic sensibility and grotesque style left an enduring mark on Russian literature.
