# Egerton Castle

## Biography

Egerton Smith Castle (1858-1920) was a multifaceted English figure, renowned as an author, antiquarian, and skilled swordsman. Born in London into a prominent family, his maternal grandfather was the publishing magnate Egerton Smith. Castle received a comprehensive education, attending King's College, London, and Trinity College, Cambridge, in addition to studies in Paris and Glasgow. He initially pursued a career in law, becoming a barrister in 1882, and also served as a lieutenant in the Second West India Regiment and later as a captain in the Royal Engineers Militia.

Beyond his literary pursuits, Castle was a passionate advocate and practitioner of historical fencing, even captaining the British épée and sabre teams at the 1908 Summer Olympics. His literary contributions include novels such as "Consequences" and "English Book-plates." He frequently collaborated with his wife, Agnes Sweetman Castle, on several works, including "The Pride of Jennico" and "The Bath Comedy." Castle was also an expert on bookplates and an avid collector, leaving behind a legacy that spanned literature, history, and sport.
