## Biography

John Arthur Thomson, a distinguished Scottish naturalist and prolific writer, was born in Saltoun, East Lothian, in 1861. After graduating from the University of Edinburgh with a master's degree in 1880, he embarked on a career dedicated to the natural sciences. He held a teaching post at the Royal Veterinary College before his appointment as Regius Professor of Natural History at the University of Aberdeen in 1899, a position he maintained until his retirement in 1930. Thomson was renowned for his research on soft corals and his accessible, engaging writing style, which brought scientific concepts to a wider public. He authored many popular works, including the highly successful "The Outline of Science," and often explored the harmonious relationship between science and religion. His collaborations with Patrick Geddes on significant biological texts also marked his career. Knighted in 1930 for his contributions, Sir John Arthur Thomson passed away in 1933, leaving behind a legacy of making complex scientific ideas understandable and inspiring.
