# Carolyn Wells

## Biography

Carolyn Wells was a remarkably prolific American author born in Rahway, New Jersey, in 1862. Her extensive career spanned poetry, humor, children's literature, and, most notably, mystery fiction. Despite experiencing partial deafness from scarlet fever at a young age, Wells developed a profound love for reading and writing, eventually working as a librarian before dedicating herself fully to her literary pursuits. She began her writing journey in the 1890s, gaining recognition for her light verse and nonsense literature, including the popular A Nonsense Anthology. Wells authored over 170 books throughout her lifetime, becoming a prominent figure in early 20th-century American literature. She is perhaps best remembered for her long-running detective series featuring Fleming Stone, which comprised sixty-one novels. Wells passed away in New York City in 1942, leaving behind a significant body of work that showcased her diverse talents.
