# Thomas Carlyle

## Biography

Thomas Carlyle was a Scottish historian, essayist, and philosopher, born in Ecclefechan, Scotland, in 1795. He rose to prominence as an influential Victorian intellectual, known for his distinctive and energetic prose style, often dubbed "Carlylese." Educated at the University of Edinburgh, he initially pursued a career in teaching before dedicating himself to writing.

Carlyle's major works include the three-volume history, The French Revolution, published in 1837, which garnered him significant acclaim. Other notable contributions include the philosophical novel Sartor Resartus, and On Heroes, Hero-Worship, and the Heroic in History, a collection of lectures exploring the impact of great individuals. He later undertook the monumental six-volume History of Friedrich II of Prussia, Called Frederick the Great. Carlyle’s writings often blended social criticism with historical analysis, advocating for strong leadership and moral purpose amidst the societal changes of the industrial age. He died in London in 1881.
