# Emily Dickinson

## Biography

Emily Dickinson was an American poet born on December 10, 1830, in Amherst, Massachusetts. She spent the majority of her life in seclusion at her family homestead, a choice that deeply influenced her introspective and unique literary voice. Educated at Amherst Academy and briefly at Mount Holyoke Female Seminary, Dickinson showed an early aptitude for writing. Despite her prolific output of nearly 1,800 poems, only about ten were published during her lifetime, often without her consent and heavily edited. Her work, characterized by its innovative use of slant rhyme, unconventional punctuation, and profound exploration of themes like nature, death, immortality, and the self, remained largely unknown until after her death on May 15, 1886. Discovered and published posthumously by her sister Lavinia, Dickinson's extraordinary talent was finally recognized, securing her place as one of the most significant and original poets in American literature.
