## Biography

Henry Rider Haggard was an English writer born in Norfolk in 1856, renowned for pioneering the lost world literary genre. His early life included several years in South Africa, where he worked in the civil service and witnessed significant political events, experiences that profoundly shaped his adventure fiction. Upon returning to England, he briefly practiced law but soon dedicated himself to writing, finding greater success and passion there.

Haggard's literary breakthrough came with *King Solomon's Mines* in 1885, a hugely popular novel that introduced the iconic adventurer Allan Quatermain. This was followed by other enduring works such as *She* and *Allan Quatermain*, establishing his reputation for thrilling romances set in exotic, often African, locales. Beyond his fiction, Haggard was also involved in agricultural reform and public affairs, for which he was knighted in 1912. He passed away in London in 1925, leaving a lasting legacy on adventure literature.
