# Gaston Leroux

## Biography

Gaston Leroux was a French journalist and author, born in Paris on May 6, 1868. Initially pursuing a law degree, he inherited a fortune that he largely gambled away, leading him to a career in journalism. He excelled as a court reporter and international correspondent for Parisian newspapers, covering significant events like the Russian Revolution of 1905. His experiences often informed his later fiction. In 1907, Leroux left journalism to dedicate himself to writing novels. He quickly found success with his detective fiction, notably "The Mystery of the Yellow Room" (1907), which introduced the amateur detective Joseph Rouletabille. However, his most enduring work is "The Phantom of the Opera," published in 1910, a gothic romance that achieved global fame through various adaptations. Leroux was a prolific writer of mystery and adventure stories. He died in Nice, France, on April 15, 1927.
