## Biography

Thomas Mann was a distinguished German novelist and essayist, born in Lübeck in 1875. His literary career began with his acclaimed novel *Buddenbrooks* in 1900, which chronicled the decline of a wealthy merchant family. He gained further international recognition for works like *Death in Venice* and *The Magic Mountain*, known for their profound psychological insights and exploration of human nature. Mann was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1929 for his significant contributions to world literature. With the rise of the Nazi regime in 1933, Mann, a vocal critic of fascism, went into exile, first in Switzerland and then in the United States, becoming an American citizen in 1944. During this period, he continued to write significant novels such as *Doctor Faustus*. He returned to Switzerland in 1952 and passed away near Zürich in 1955. His legacy endures through his complex characters and deep engagement with societal and philosophical themes.
