# Anna Sewell

## Biography

Anna Sewell was an English novelist, born in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, in 1820, into a Quaker family. Her mother, Mary Wright Sewell, was a published children's author. A childhood accident at age fourteen severely injured Anna's ankles, leaving her with permanent mobility issues and a lifelong reliance on horse-drawn carriages for transport. This experience cultivated her profound love and empathy for horses, sparking her interest in animal welfare. Living with her parents throughout her life, Sewell never married. Despite her chronic ill health, which often confined her to bed, she dedicated her final years to writing her only novel, "Black Beauty." Completed in 1877, the book, narrated from a horse's perspective, aimed to advocate for the humane treatment of horses. It quickly became a bestseller, though Sewell lived only five months after its publication, dying in April 1878 at the age of 58. Her groundbreaking work had a lasting impact on animal welfare.
