# James Stephens

## Biography

James Stephens was an influential Irish novelist and poet, born in Dublin in 1880. Growing up in challenging circumstances, he was largely self-educated through extensive reading. He began his literary career under the mentorship of George William Russell, known as Æ, publishing his first poetry collection, Insurrections, in 1909. Stephens became renowned for his unique retellings of Irish myths and fairy tales, often blending humor and lyricism. His most celebrated work, The Crock of Gold, a philosophical fantasy novel, was published in 1912 and brought him widespread acclaim. A passionate Irish nationalist, he was also deeply engaged with Gaelic culture and supported the Sinn Féin movement. Later in life, he became friends with James Joyce, who even considered him to help complete Finnegans Wake. Stephens passed away in London in 1950, leaving behind a significant body of work that explored Irish folklore and identity.
